design process

BRIEFING SESSION / CONSULTATIONS  Depending on the requirements of the project, an

initial meeting to outline a brief is held to determine the type of design.  This consultative process

may include talking with adults and/or children with Justin briefing them on possible directions for

a design and encouraging input and ideas.

SITE SURVEY / BASE PLANS  To prepare a design, a precise site plan or base plan is required

which will include all existing features, services, identification of vegetation, levels and contours.

This can be provided as a separate plan for future works and stages and is a useful resource for

any future developments on the site.  Depending on the complexity of the site, a surveyor provided

by Justin as part of his service may be needed.

SITE ASSESSMENT / ANALYSIS  This is a detailed investigation of the space which can be the basis for discussion and/or interpretation.  It involves identifying and quantifying the various aspects of the site, the relative positioning of structures and space, and the determining of which direction the design should take. CONSULTATION  Whether it is with a client or a community, consultation informs design and is therefore essential. The design process should always be explored and challenged in discussion with individuals, the community and children. Justin is passionate about children’s consultation. Engaging with young minds through activities is fun, enlightening and rewarding. Children very much appreciate the question “What would you like?” CONCEPT DESIGN  The initial part of any design, it can be colour or black and white plans, sections or views.  It can include examples of suggested materials and plants and also an initial construction cost estimate.  From this more accurate and measured plan can be prepared for the purpose of construction. LANDSCAPE PLANS  If a single plan is needed for the purpose of permits or there are budget constraints, this can be undertaken and can include planting schedules, materials and landscape details. MASTER PLANS  If the project is on a large scale and will require staging to build, this plan may be very important as it provides clear direction for a landscape or playspace without the detail being shown.  It can show areas of planting, paving, suggested elements and design features. CONTRACT DOCUMENTATION  Preparation of construction ready drawings, specific details and specifications for quoting, approvals and construction.  It is always necessary for accurate costing and quoting. CONTRACT ADMINISTRATION  When construction is ready to begin, this phase can include the obtaining of quotes, reviewing and recommending a suitably qualified contractor, preparation of a contract and acting as a superintendent during works which can review and advise contractors on work that is underway.  This can also include approval from various authorities (eg. DEECD, Local and State Governments, WorkSafe), OH&S, quality of works and approval / review of contractor invoicing.  Daily or regular inspections can be organised as required. COSTINGS & ESTIMATES  During all phases of the design process, cost estimates can be undertaken to ensure that the budget is being met.  As the design becomes more detailed and contract documentation is supplied, the cost estimate can be more accurate.
